PREP ROUNDUP: Stanwood wins battle of unbeaten girls tennis teams

Published 4:16 pm Thursday, March 25, 2010

SNOHOMISH — Two undefeated girls tennis teams stood atop the Wesco North standings Wednesday. Only one remains there today.

Experience and a hard-earned doubles win paid off for Stanwood, which emerged with a 4-3 victory over the Panthers at Snohomish High School.

“Against a veteran team, against experience and power, I figured we would struggle,” Snohomish head coach Dick Jansen said. “It was one of those matches that came down to a point here, a point there and that was what decided it.”

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Kallen Shaughnessy and Amme Verbarendse faced Julie Winston and Brielle Nicholas with the meet tied 3-3. Snohomish took the first set 7-5, but Stanwood swung the momentum and the match with a 7-6, 6-4 ending.

“It was a really tough first doubles match, it had kind of a momentum swing,” Stanwood head coach Trudy Abrams said. “Amee played really solid at the net … Kallen was just the veteran. She has been there before.”

Stanwood took the first three singles matches, with Megan LaLone winning 6-0, 6-0; Anna Fina taking the second match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Marina Messerli was victorious 6-3, 7-5.

“This one was for early season bragging rights,” Jansen said.
