Garbage strike vote

Garbage, recycling and yard-waste haulers in Snohomish and King counties are expected to vote this weekend on whether to strike.

About 500 members of Teamsters union Local 174 are scheduled to take the vote Sunday on whether to strike if they can’t settle a contract dispute by March 31 with Waste Management and Allied Waste. If Local 174 strikes, about 300 members of Teamsters Local 117 would not cross picket lines.

Generally, Local 174 drivers pick up garbage and Local 117 members handle yard waste and recycling.

Comment on late start: The Lake Stevens School District has started an online survey to gather parent and public opinion about delaying the start of school on Wednesdays.

School districts across the state provide training, planning and collaboration time using different methods, such as delayed starts, early releases and training days that are nonschool days for students.

To comment, go to www.lkstevens.wednet.edu.

Paper copies of the survey are available at Lake Stevens schools.
