Cedar Park shares Easter with homeless

Students from Cedar Park Christian School in Bothell shared Easter with homeless families at Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission on April 1.

Kindergarten and second-grade classes created an Easter mural called “He’s Alive” that depicts the events of Easter and will be displayed at the mission.

Students also gave gift bags with various treats and toys to homeless children and read an Easter book with them.

Mariner High senior is a scholar athlete

The Davis Law Group in Seattle recently awarded senior Chris Johnson of Mariner High School for his commitment to academics and athletics by recognizing him as the Davis Law Group Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Johnson received a $100 scholarship for being selected.

Johnson, who has a 3.46 cumulative grade-point average, is a three-year letterman in football. As a senior, he was captain of the football team and was recognized as second team all-Wesco offensive lineman. He is also a one-year letterman in wrestling and a three-year letterman in track.

Chris is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. He was a student coach for wrestling and track at Explorer Middle School and has coached Mukilteo Boys &Girls Club basketball for the past two years.

Chris has been accepted to both Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., and Whitworth University in Spokane.

Students participate in Young Authors Day

More than 600 students participated in the second annual Young Authors Day on March 17 at Terrace Park School in Mountlake Terrace. The event brought Western Washington authors Tom Brenner, Kevin Emerson, Kirby Larson, Joni Sensel and Jim Whiting to the school.

The authors shared their paths to becoming published authors in sessions with the students. The students shared their own writing, created art and learned new writing techniques.

Kamiak grad named to CWU dean’s list

Isaac Castillo, a senior at Central Washington University, was named to the fall 2009 dean’s list at Central Washington University.

Castillo is a 2005 Kamiak High School graduate. He has been the principal string bass player with the CWU orchestra the past four years. Castillo has received several scholarships, including the John Moawad Scholarship, and was awarded a teaching grant this school year.

His parents are Philip and Faith Castillo of Mukilteo.

Snohomish resident named to dean’s list

Julian Ashley of Snohomish was named to the dean’s list at Eastern Oregon University.

To qualify for the dean’s list, students must achieve and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework for the duration of the term.

EvCC instructor honored by college

Everett Community College Health and Wellness instructor Sue Grigsby was selected as a 2010 Distinguished Alumni by Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif. She will be honored at a university banquet April 23.

Grigsby graduated from Humboldt State in 1979. As a student, she broke track and field records and is still a competitive athlete on the international level.

She is helping future students through the Sue E. Grigsby Scholarship Endowment for Humboldt State Kinesiology Majors and the Sue E. Grigsby Women’s Distance Running Scholarship Endowment.
