LANGLEY — Shawn Klopt’s emotions were swirling after South Whidbey goalie Keegan Harshman made a tough save in regulation against the junior midfielder.
Then he got a second chance at heroics, sinking the final goal in a 5-4 shootout for a 2-1 Cedarcrest Cascade Conference win Thursday night at South Whidbey H.S.
The win breaks up a bottleneck in the Cascade Conference standings. Cedarcrest, South Whidbey and Archbishop Murphy all came into Thursday’s games with identical 5-3 records. Cedarcrest is now 6-3, 6-5 overall. South Whidbey fell to 5-4, 5-5.
“I was a little nervous having him kick so I had five guys kick before him,” Cedarcrest head coach Zack Pittis said. “He was the sixth kicker and he was pretty happy to bury that one. He is one of my better guys. It was good that he got some redemption there.”
In the 43rd minute, South Whidbey took a 1-0 lead off Dean Freundlich’s free kick from 30 yards out. Cedarcrest goalie Colin McHargue got screened out on the play.
After South Whidbey had a player ejected midway through the second half, Cedarcrest capitalized, scoring in stoppage time on a Zach Wilhelm (Ingvar Judson assist) goal.
“It was a good minute or two into the injury time,” Pittis said. “That was kind of a momentum swing for us.
“This was big for us … the league championship could go to as many as four teams.”
Coupeville 3, Granite Falls 0: At Granite Falls, Coupeville scored its first two goals two minutes apart and Evan Coleman earned the shutout in goal in the Cascade Conference game. Ben Hayes (Spencer Tack assist) scored in the 13th minute. Two minutes later, Tack assisted Nevin Miranda for a 2-0 Coupeville lead. In the 51st minute, Tony Jansen (Hayes assist) scored the final Coupeville (5-4 in league, 5-5 overall) goal. Granite Falls’ (0-9, 1-10) goalie was not reported.
