WALLA WALLA — Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said Thursday that Walla Walla Community College would receive a $3 million Economic Development Administration grant to expand a green jobs training center.
The community college plans to use the federal money to expand a center created in 2007 to train workers in skills needed to restore watersheds, help fish runs recover and better manage limited water resources.
Walla Walla Community College is working with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to provide enhanced skills in environmental career fields. The project is expected to create 360 jobs and leverage $28 million in private investment.
College President Steven L. VanAusdle says expanding the center is critical to providing the training necessary to help individuals pursue careers in green job sectors.
