Front Porch: Jennifer Holliday to attend YWCA Inspire Luncheon

The YWCA Snohomish County’s Inspire Luncheon begins at noon May 4 at Everett Conference Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave. in Everett.

Two-time Grammy Award winner, actress and songwriter Jennifer Holliday, best known for her ballad, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” in the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” will be a guest at the event.

Holliday has been an advocate on mental health issues and depression awareness and has spoken about her struggles with depression, weight and self image.

Tea ceremony in Everett

The Everett Community College Nippon Business Institute hosts free Japanese tea ceremonies May 5, 6 and 7 with guest tea master Kumiko Akiyma.

The tea ceremonies are at 3 p.m. May 5; 6 p.m. May 6; and 6 p.m. May 7 at 905 Wetmore Ave.

Live with solar energy

Island County Beach Watchers’ Fourth Wednesday Speaker Series is planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Camano Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive on Camano Island. This month’s program is “Saving Energy and $$ Around Your Home.”

The program, by Dick Kent, is about solar system designs, installation and training. He has used solar energy for all his electrical needs since 1992.
