PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Shorewood clinches district play-in game
Published 11:58 pm Friday, April 30, 2010
SHORELINE — When the season began, expectations weren’t that high for the Shorewood baseball team, which graduated eight seniors. But the young squad exceeded them.
On senior night, the Thunderbirds defeated Edmonds-Woodway 8-2 to secure at minimum, a 4A District 1 play-in game.
Kevin Moriarty pitched five innings for Shorewood, allowing just two runs on two hits with four strikeouts.
“The story of the game was the pitching,” Shorewood head coach Wyatt Tonkin said. “We got excellent pitching by our big horse (Moriarty) here. His ERA now is like 0.52.”
Paul Stotts and Nate McClellan led a well-balanced offensive attack to lead the Thunderbirds into the playoffs, both going 2-for-3. Stotts added two RBI and two stolen bases.
“That was our goal to begin with,” Tonkin said referring to the playoffs. “Because we’re so young … we went through some adversity this year and slowly but surely we improved and we’re peaking at the right time.
“Honestly, I think with our pitching we could be a dangerous team.”
