Volunteers needed for Everett event that helps homeless and battered women get a fresh start

HELP WANTED: Women who are willing to volunteer, spending a day helping homeless women feel both pampered and as if their life has turned a corner.

About 100 volunteers are needed May 10, the first day of an annual program dubbed Queen, It’s A New Day. The events that day include providing the women with back-to-work clothing, hairstyles, manicures, pedicures and makeup tips.

Volunteers will be asked to work from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., said Tami Thweatt, a group spokeswoman. The event is at the Holiday Inn, 3105 Pine St. in Everett.

The goal is to have a personal assistant for each of the women either currently in a homeless shelter or transitioning to other housing, she said.

The women stay overnight at a hotel and spend the next day setting goals, listening to speakers and participating in workshops to help them prepare for jobs.

Since its inception, Queen, It’s a New Day has assisted 1,000 battered, addicted and homeless women.

The program is part of Recovery for Life, a Christian faith-based organization.

This is the 10th year for the event, founded by Judy Hoff, chief executive of Queen, It’s A New Day.

What’s needed: New and gently used casual career clothing. Shoes, pants, jewelry and accessories are especially needed.

Donations may be made on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at 1707 Merrill Creek Parkway 24 (in building 7) in Everett.
