EVERETT — What likely started as a kitchen fire at an apartment complex in downtown Everett on Tuesday evening erupted into a two-alarm blaze.
Dozens of firefighters rushed to the Northstar Apartments in the 3300 block of Lombard Avenue about 5 p.m. No serious injuries were reported Tuesday evening.
One man had to lower himself from the balcony and jump to the ground, Everett Fire Marshal Glen Martinsen said. Medics drove him to a hospital for evaluation.
The 33-unit complex is run by Compass Health, an organization that provides mental health services. Staff members were scrambling to help tenants get to a safe place on Tuesday evening. Snohomish County Red Cross volunteers were called to assist.
Fire investigators believe the fire began on the stove in a third-floor unit, Martinsen said. The call first came after a fire alarm activated, then someone reported seeing smoke.
When crews arrived, flames were shooting through the roof, sending a plume of smoke into the air.
