Welcome, Elmo

If you’re having trouble finding your way around downtown Everett today, just ask Big Bird if he knows the way to “Sesame Street.”

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson plans to temporarily rename Hewitt Avenue after the beloved children’s TV show.

Drop by the corner of Hewitt and Oakes avenues at 10 a.m. today, when Stephanson will read a proclamation and unveil a sign. Elmo, the furry red star of “Sesame Street,” plans to stop by, too.

Elmo and his pals are in town for a “Sesame Street Live” show Friday through Sunday at Comcast Arena.

Open house at online school: Fall enrollment is underway for Insight School of Washington, a tuition-free, online public high school.

Parents and students can learn about the online education option by attending an information session from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Baker Hall on the Everett Community College campus.

Garden club scholarship offered: The Floretum Garden Club of Edmonds offers a $1,000 scholarship to a 2010 high school graduate, community college student or individual planning a career in a horticultural field. The deadline is Friday.

Applicants must be legal residents with a 3.25 grade point average or higher.

A winner will be selected based on interest in horticulture, floral design, landscape design, botany, forestry or a related field; financial need and activities and achievements in school and community.
