PASCO — The Kamiak Knights were not in the best of health Tuesday for the first round of the Class 4A girls state golf tournament.
The Knights’ top two players, Seo Hee Moon and Rachel Choi, came into the tournament battling illness and a balky back, respectively, Knights coach Bud Davis said.
Though Moon and Choi managed to finish the first round in the top 12, neither was at the top of her game, Davis said.
“We’re not playing our best,” he said. “We’re kind of all beat up.”
Moon, a senior who won the Class 4A state title as a freshman, was tied for sixth after shooting a 2-over-par 74 at Sun Willows Golf Course. Choi, also a senior, was tied for 12th after firing a 76.
Kamiak’s third player, sophomore Grace Choi, shot a 90 and failed to make the cut.
Although Kamiak was the only school with two players in the top 12 after the first round, Davis said a team title for the Knights is not likely. “There was a pretty good showing by a lot of schools,” he said.
Defending champion Chessey Thomas of Lewis &Clark shot a 68 to lead the 80-golfer field. She was one of two L&C players in the top 14.
Jordan Ferreira of Bellarmine Prep was second, one shot behind Thomas. Bellarmine landed three golfers in the top 30.
Newport led all schools with four golfers among the top 30.
Other Wesco players who survived the cut and will play in today’s second round included Corey Roys of Edmonds-Woodway (81), Cassie McKinley of Shorewood (83) and Blair Nesseth of Snohomish (86).

Everett, with Stephanie Soelling tied for 10th and Jody Barhanovich tied fopr 21st, was among a handful of teams with two players making the cut.
“Our goal is fourth,” Barhanovich said. “There are three teams with three (making the cut). We want to be the best of the teams with two.”
Soelling shot a personal best 79 over the par-72 Horn Rapids Golf Course. She is eight shots behind the leaders.
“I was a little disappointed,” Barhanovich said of her 83. “I know I can do better tomorrow.”
