Lake Stevens woman hurt in house fire

LAKE STEVENS — A woman suffered burns late Wednesday morning trying to stop a fire in her bedroom.

Fire crews rushed to a home in the 7400 block of 137th Avenue NE about 11:40 a.m., Lake Stevens Fire Department Battalion Chief Perry Putnam said. The fire started in the bedroom when a curtain ignited from a halogen lamp.

The sound of smoke alarms alerted the homeowner to the fire. The woman, who is in her 30s, grabbed the burning curtain, injuring her hands, arm and side, Putnam said. Medics treated the woman for first and second-degree burns. She declined to go to the hospital.

“When the smoke alarms sound, get out of the house and call 911,” Putnam said.

Flames didn’t spread beyond the bedroom. The fire melted the carpet, the window and the window sill, Putnam said. The loss was estimated under $10,000.
