Ryan Murray hoists the trophy

The Ryan Murray-led Canadian U-18 team claimed the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Slovakia, defeating the United States 1-0 in today’s championship game. Murray, the Silvertips’ star defenseman, was Canada’s captain. Canada won the game on a goal from Red Deer’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
This was a far better international experience than Murray’s first stint with Canada’s U-18 team, when the Canadians were threatened with relegation at the U-18 World Championships last spring. Murray, who was the youngest player on the team, would seem to have a bright future with Hockey Canada, and the next question is how soon he’ll start getting consideration for World Juniors.
