Everett: EvCC seeks volunteer tutors
Everett Community College’s Adult Literacy Center seeks volunteers who can offer two or more hours per week to assist adults in learning basic math and to read, write and speak English.
Volunteers must have patience, possess good literacy skills, and be sensitive to a variety of learning styles and ethnic backgrounds.
Tutoring times and locations are flexible. Training is free with a six-month commitment.
The EvCC Adult Literacy Program assists Snohomish County adults in gaining skills needed to progress to technical certification programs, college entrance and citizenship.
“Volunteer tutors promote a better future for more than 100 adults every year,” volunteer coordinator Judy Frost said.

Lake Stevens: Help fill school supplies
The Lake Stevens Family Center is collecting school supplies for its Back to School Bonanza scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 29 at the center, 1803 123rd Drive NE.
Suggested donations include backpacks, rulers, pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils, markers, erasers, glue sticks and protractors. Monetary donations are accepted as well.
Supplies may be dropped off at the following Lake Stevens businesses: the Lake Stevens Family Center (Tuesday through Thursday), the post office at 1709 124th Ave NE, Fire District No. 8 at 9811 Chapel Hill Road and ERA Dan Williams Realty at 303 91st Ave. NE.
Families will be able to pick up supplies at the event.

Lynnwood: PAWS cuts fees to adopt adult cats
Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is slashing the adoption fee for all cats ages 6 months and older from $90 to $30 through Aug. 31.
The organization’s Lynnwood and Seattle shelters are overflowing with cats.
Cats adopted from PAWS are spayed or neutered, microchipped, have had their first set of vaccines and come with a cat carrier.

Mill Creek: Library board has openings
The city of Mill Creek has two vacant positions on its Library Board of Trustees.
Both positions are four-year terms that expire Aug. 31, 2012. The board, which meets the first Monday of every other month starting in February, advises the City Council on operations at the Mill Creek Library.
