EVERETT — An early morning arson Wednesday caused an estimated $30,000 damage to a greenhouse at Mariner High School south of Everett, officials said.
The greenhouse is used three periods a day, primarily by special education students, Mukilteo School District Andy Muntz said.
A passer-by taking a walk noticed black smoke coming from the structure just after 5 a.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.
“They think it could have been set an hour or more before the fire was reported,” Hynes said.
No one was injured.
A Snohomish County deputy fire marshal and his K-9 trained to sniff for ignitable liquids investigated the fire scene.
The blaze was less than a block away from a fire station and took less than 15 minutes to get under control, Hynes said.
“Firefighters could see the flames as they left Fire Station 11,” Hynes said.
By the time they arrived, flames had burned through the roof of a storage area in the greenhouse.
The damaged building was one of three greenhouses on the campus at 200 120th St. SW.
The fire did not affect the beginning of the school day, Muntz said.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the fire marshal’s office or call 800-55-ARSON.
