Voter registration deadlines in October

Oct. 4 is the voter registration deadline for the Nov. 2 General Election for mail-in or online registration, or changes to name or address. Oct. 25 is the deadline for in-person registration at county elections office for first-time Washington registrants.

Candidate forums

  • The 44th Legislative District Democrats hold their October meeting 7-9 p.m., Oct. 14, at the Snohomish School District Resource Center, 1601 Avenue D, Snohomish. Come meet local Democratic candidates, volunteer to help with Get Out the Vote activities and learn about the issues that will be on the ballot in November. Everyone is welcome. Sponsored by the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation in partnership with The Herald, Marilyn Watkins of the Economic Policy Institute will represent Yes on 1098, and Joe Barer of Lake Partners, will represent Defeat 1098.     Tap the energy of the sun

    PUD’s Solar Homes Tour will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Oct. 2. The self-guided tour will feature more than a dozen homes in communities throughout Snohomish County and Camano Island. The event is being held in conjunction with the Green Everett Renewable Living Fair. For a complete list of homes on the solar tour, visit www.snopud.com/solarexpress.

    The Green Everett fair will feature numerous speakers, children’s activities and informational booths covering topics such as neighborhood gardens, backyard chickens, low impact entertainment, cheap transportation and more. Visitors also will be able to exchange up to five incandescent light bulbs for free compact fluorescent light bulbs. The fair will be held at the PUD headquarters, 2320 California Street in Everett.

  • A new Fitness 19 will open Oct. 1 in the Cedar Park center on 228th Street and 44th Avenue West. The fitness club is one of 140 Fitness 19s across the country. Brian and Krissy Johnson are the partners of the business.

  • Steve Wilde has joined the leadership team at Lynnwood-based Network Home Loans. He will serve as the vice president and branch manager for its Everett Home Loan Center.

  • The Greater Edmonds Chamber of Commerce’s networking breakfast is held every Wednesday morning, 7:30 a.m. at Fairwinds-Brighton Court, 6520 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. The event is free to attend. Breakfast can be ordered for $8. For more information call 425-670-1496.

    COMMUNITY NEWS

    Join the patrol

    The Lynnwood Police Citizens Patrol is recruiting new members. This group of 70 men and women, whose average age is 41, acts as extra eyes and ears for the Police Department. This team also directs traffic at accident scenes, writes disabled parking citations, opens locked car doors, provides bike patrol of the parks and shopping areas and helps with emergencies.

    Members receive training. Applicants must be reasonably physically fit and able to pass a criminal history background check. Members usually work at least 10 hours a month and uniforms are provided.

    Energy grants available

    Snohomish County is accepting grant applications from local municipalities and non profits for energy efficiency improvements.

    Snohomish County has $218,000 available to award and is inviting proposals for projects that will improve energy efficiency and conservation. Evaluated and scoring criteria is described in the application packet available at www.snoco.org under “Spotlight.”

    Meadowdale Park tunnel reopens

    Parks and the Adopt A Stream Foundation teamed up to remove more than 100 fish (juvenile salmon, riffle sculpin and flounders) from Lunds Gulch Creek in advance of gravel removal from the stream channel where it flowed under the railroad tracks. The fish were moved upstream from the work site and released. Afterwards, boardwalks were placed over the creek under the railroad track making this access passable for both people and fish.     Taste funds to service clubs

    A Taste of Edmonds, celebrating its 28th year last August, generated $19,000 for local service clubs.

    This annual three-day events, presented by the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce, raises funds to benefit The Exchange Club, Soroptomist Club, Rotary Club of Edmonds (Lunch Club), Kiwanis, Edmonds Lions Club, Explorers, Edmonds Community Foundation, Edmonds Woodway High School’s senior class and Edmonds Boys &Girls Club.
