Residents in Mobile, Ala., took part in a video promoting EADS’ tanker program.

EADS is competing against the Boeing Co. for a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract. The European company would assemble its A330-based tanker in Mobile, Ala., if it wins. EADS is the parent company of Boeing’s commercial rival, Airbus.

“We all know people who are out of work,” says Mobile interviewee Mike McKenney, who will be part of the team that builds the KC-45 production facilities in Mobile. “The KC-45 would help restart our economy here.”

EADS says its tanker would create 1,500 permanent jobs in Mobile, not counting construction jobs. The company says its tanker would support 48,000 American jobs.

“These video testimonials give voice to the American workers, their families and communities that will directly benefit if we are selected to build the KC-45 here in the U.S.,” Ralph D. Crosby, Jr., EADS North America Chairman, said in a statement.

Although the Air Force is expected to announce a tanker winner next month, local analyst Scott Hamilton thinks it unlikely the Pentagon will meet its deadline.
