The Boeing Co. will decide “soon” how it will handle the future of its single-aisle 737, the leader of the commercial airplanes division said Wednesday.

Jim Albaugh, president of Boeing commercial airplanes, told the American Bar Association that the company will decide “within the next several months” whether it will develop a new aircraft to succeed the Renton-built 737, the Associated Press reports.

Boeing initially had expected to make a decision before year’s end but has said that decision could slip into early 2011.

The jet maker also is determining whether it will replace or upgrade its Everett-built 777.
