Mock trial team places third in state
The Archbishop Murphy High School mock trial team placed third at the 2011 State Championship.
The team finished with a 3-1 record and won 10 out of 12 ballots in four trials, earning the best finish in school history.
A total of 60 mock trial teams competed from around the state.
Kennan Mighell, Dan Harris and Stephen Oswald received outstanding witness nominations. Annie Dang, Amy Purdy, Jonathan Lucas and Brandon Alfond received outstanding attorney nominations. Other team members included Sarah Colombo, Adam Sundholm, Collin Daviscourt, Nick DeVoll, Jake Dini, Alex Langlois, Meghan Nelson and bailiff Tiernan Dwyer.
Local art students win national awards
Eight students in Snohomish County have received national awards for their outstanding artwork through the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
The following students were honored:
•Caroline Dreher, a freshman at Snohomish High School, won a gold medal in mixed media for “Stain Glass.”
Katie Henry, a senior at Cascade High School, received an American Visions Medal in sculpture for “Two-Headed Man.”
Linsie Kalland, a senior at Monroe High School, received a gold medal in painting for “Surplus.”
Esther Kim, a sophomore at Kamiak High School, took a silver medal in drawing for “Stereotype.”
Devin Maloney, a senior at Meadowdale High School, received a silver medal in mixed media for “Pale Lady.”
Abby Mitton, a senior at Mountlake Terrace High School, received a silver medal in drawing for “The Cyclist.”
Aaron Pavlakos, a senior at Henry M. Jackson High School, received a gold medal in design for “Twirl Mobil.”
Kyle Schuman, a junior at Cascade High School, received a gold medal in printmaking for “The Shower.”
2 Everett students take Gonzaga honors
Ian Houts of Everett was named to the Gonzaga University dean’s list for the fall semester.
Houts attended Immaculate Conception School in Everett and graduated from Archbishop Murphy High School in 2009. He is the son of Richard and Susan Houts.
Meaghan Webster of Everett was named to the Gonzaga University president’s list for the fall semester.
Middle school names students of month
Harbour Pointe Middle School selected more than 10 students of the month for the March theme of caring.
Sixth grade: Jamie Beirne, Sofia Carlo, Faraz Farange, Levi Neuert and Rachel Powell.
Seventh grade: Merrick Corpening, Jillian Hatfield, Hailey McLaughlin and Muhammad Rezuna.
Eighth grade: Matthew Bettencourt, Mark Bieniek, Madeline Campbell and Lindsey Clayburn.
