Apply: Garden club to offer scholarship
The Monroe Garden Club plans to offer a $1,000 scholarship to a Monroe High School graduate, community college student or anyone pursuing a career in a horticulture-related field.
First consideration will be given to a Monroe graduate. Applications are available at Monroe High School, 17001 Tester Road, Monroe.
Proceeds from the club’s annual plant sale provide funds for the scholarship.
This year’s sale is planned for May 7 at the East County Senior Center, 276 Sky River Parkway, Monroe.
Attend: Library to host series of events
The Mukilteo Library is hosting events in the next two months:
•English as a Second Language Talk Time is planned from 7 to 8 p.m. on April 11 and 18.
Talk Time is for adults wishing to practice speaking English with other ESL students and a trained tutor.
•Keepin’ Knit Real is planned from 10 a.m. to noon on April 14 and 21.
Knitters of all skill levels are welcome to share knowledge and build skills. Beginners must bring a pair of 8 or 9 needles and a skein of worsted-weight yarn.
•Tai Chi for Children is planned from 1 to 1:45 p.m. on April 16.
Local instructor Robert Levy will teach tai chi exercises to kids. The fluid body movements can help children do better in school.
•Tai Chi for Adults is planned from 2 to 2:45 p.m. on April 16.
Levy will also teach tai chi to adults. Health benefits may include reduced stress, improved balance, flexibility and strength, and increased energy. Teens are welcome.
•Mukilteo Daytime Book Group is planned from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on April 18.
The group will be discussing the book, “Methland: the Death and Life of an American Small Town,” by Nick Reding.
•Mukilteo Evening Book Group is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on April 21.
The group plans to discuss the book, “Ties that Bind, Ties that Break,” by Lensey Namioka. Copies of both books are available at the library’s check-out desk.

Restore: Earth Day celebration
An Earth Day Celebration of the Allen Creek and Quilceda Watershed is planned for 10 a.m. April 30 at Jennings Park in Marysville.
There will be books for guests to learn about water pollution, salmon, the water cycle, native plants, controlling invasive plants and restoration projects.
Guest are invited to restore Allen Creek by planting a native tree or shrub, helping to remove invasive blackberry, and spreading mulch to nourish plantings and suppress weeds.
The first 200 participants get a free “Earth Day 2011” shirt.

Taste: Foundation to hold benefit
The Bethany of the Northwest Foundation is set to host its sixth Annual Taste of the Northwest at 5 p.m. April 29 at the Comcast Arena.
There will be a sampling of Northwest wines and craft beers, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, music and a raffle for a Hawaii trip for two.
The cost is $15 per person and includes admission and a scrip for two tastes.
The arena is at 2,000 Hewitt Ave., Everett.
