Machinists Union providing food for unemployed

The union for Machinists at Boeing recognized the needs of their brothers and sisters, and opened their checkbooks.

They are collecting food through April to support the Puget Sound Labor Agency’s efforts to help feed unemployed workers and their families in Snohomish and King counties.
The Machinists added $1,000 to the collection.

Anyone who wants to donate can leave cash or non-perishable food at any hall operated by the Machinists Union District Lodge 751, including the Everett Hall, which is at 8729 Airport Road.

“The need is really great,” says Susan Palmer, the union’s secretary and treasurer. “Unemployment is high, and many of the people who are working don’t earn enough to make ends meet. As a result, the food bank is running out of food almost every week.”

All the food and money collected, including the $1,000 donation from the union’s district governing council, will benefit the Puget Sound Labor Agency food bank.

Holy Rosary Parish will break ground on its new Parish Center at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at 630 Seventh Ave. N. in Edmonds.

Demolition on the old hall should begin May 16.

“This will be a great day for the parish,” says Rev. Kenneth Haydock. “A new parish center was our first building priority when I came here in 1996, but it was deferred by rebuilding the school. Midway through that project, the church began to crack badly and had to be rebuilt. Now, at long last, we will begin.”

They hope to move into the new building in March 2012.

What is that big pile of material in Bothell?

Large piles of dirt and gravel are sitting in the Crossroads construction area, adjacent to the Park at Bothell Landing, at 9919 NE 180th St. The Park at Bothell Landing features a veteran’s memorial, an historic museum and Lytle House that can be rented for wedding, meetings and other special events. There is also an amphitheater that can be rented.

Now there is also that big pile of dirt and gravel.

It may not look like it has a purpose, but actually, it’s “pre-loading.”

The 15-foot mound has been placed there to compress existing soils. The gravel mound will sit in place until engineers determine that sufficient settlement has occurred, indicating that the soils have become stable for planned new road construction.

Good to know.
