Oak Harbor: Plane headed for display site

A Douglas A-3 Skywarrior is set to fly into Whidbey Island Naval Air Station at 1 p.m. today on its way to a permanent display site at the corner of Ault Field Road and Langley Boulevard.

The nonprofit Skywarrior Memorial Foundation helped get the jet to Oak Harbor, Navy officials said.

The plane was removed recently from the Navy’s active fleet inventory and now is on permanent loan from the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fla.

The A-3D Skywarrior, nicknamed “The Whale” because of its size, first brought the sound of jet engines to NAS Whidbey Island in 1956. The Whales were used in Vietnam until the arrival of the A-6 Intruders in 1966. The Skywarrior’s missions until retirement in 1991 included air reconnaissance and aerial refueling.
