An Air Force officer from Edmonds who was one of nine Americans shot and killed by an Afghan military pilot will be buried at the Air Force Academy today in Colorado.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Philip Ambard, 44, taught French and Spanish at the school.

Officials say services for him will be held at the Cadet Protestant Chapel. Burial will follow at the Academy Cemetery. Ambard was killed April 27 at the Kabul airport.

Ambard was an assistant professor at the academy outside Colorado Springs. He had taught there since 2003.

Help local kids get a new playground: Fourth-graders at Martha Lake Elementary School created a video and entered it in a contest to win $15,000 for a new playground. The top five finalists will receive grants from Let’s Play, a community partnership funded by Dr Pepper Snapple Group.

Auction in Lynnwood: A Casino Night & Gift Basket Auction is planned for 4 p.m. Friday at the Lynnwood Senior Center.

Tickets are $12 in advance at the center, 5800 198th St. SW in Lynnwood. The evening begins with a barbecued burger dinner followed by casino games, dessert and prizes. Pay for dinner and the rest is included.
