DARRINGTON — Detectives from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office major crimes unit are investigating a gruesome discovery from over the weekend.

A human skull was found in a plastic bag off a stretch of highway between Arlington and Darrington, officials said.

It was turned over to

the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.

“A person clearing blackberry bushes on some property along Highway 530 Sunday discovered a plastic bag with a cranium inside,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said. “It appears the cranium had been there for years, possibly longer, given the condition.”

The property was near Swede Heaven Road.

It was turned over to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office for examination and to see if identification can be determined.

“There’s no obvious connections between the found cranium and any of our missing persons cases, at this time,” Hover said.

“It could be a while before the medical examiner’s office is able to make an identification, if that’s possible,” Hover said.
