Everett: Nominate a senior for award
The Washington Oakes Retirement Community is accepting nominations for the Lighthouse Awards, which recognize people ages 62 and older who are working to make the greater Everett area a better place.
The nomination deadline is Aug. 5. The award ceremony is scheduled for October at Washington Oakes Retirement, 1717 Rockefeller Ave.

Everett: The port wants your ideas
The Port of Everett is soliciting public feedback on how to improve on the plan for the North Marina uplands.
The upland property was slated for dense, mixed-use development. The developer of the mixed-use concept, Maritime Trust Company, filed bankruptcy in 2008. In March, all development restrictions on the site were lifted when the bankruptcy claims were settled.
The port now wants to know what you think about other uses for the upland boating facilities, the best location for different types of businesses, how dense development should be, and how much parking and open space should be available. A comment form is set up online at the port’s website.

Everett: Social Security offices cut hours
Effective Aug. 15, the Everett and Lynnwood Social Security offices will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — a reduction of 30 minutes each weekday.
The agency is trying to cut back on employee overtime costs.

Lake Stevens: Firefighters’ pancake breakfast
Snohomish County Fire District 8 in Lake Stevens is holding its Annual Firefighters’ Pancake Breakfast this weekend as part of Aquafest.
The event will include all-you-can eat pancakes, ham and eggs, district public educator Alison Caton said.
Breakfast is scheduled from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday at the downtown fire station at 12409 21st St. NE in Lake Stevens. Local firefighters will be around to chat as well, Caton said.
The breakfast is free, but donations are encouraged. Donations are used for scholarships and community projects.
Snohomish County: Speak up about ecology proposal
The Washington Department of Ecology invites the public to weigh in through Sept. 1 on a proposal to increase fees that are paid by some sectors of businesses, industries and local governments for water quality permit coverage.
The permits are the state’s primary tool to prevent water pollution.
Ecology proposes to increase the fees in only those permit fee categories that are not adequately funded. Ecology uses the funding to process permits and conduct inspections.
