40 dogs await adoption

EVERETT — The 40 dogs rescued from a Lake Stevens house are up for adoption starting today.
The miniature pinschers, papillons and other small dogs are doubled up in cages, primarily for companionship but also because of a shortage of space at the Everett Animal Shelter.
The dogs were discovered when Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies and paramedics went to check on the welfare of a Lake Stevens man and found him dead. They also found the dogs, which were seized and removed by Snohomish County Animal Control Services.
All of the dogs are now in “overall good health” after about three days of no food or water, said Kate Reardon, Everett’s public information director.
The adoption process is not traditional because of the high number of dogs that were rescued, Reardon said. It is the second-highest number of dogs to be rescued in one day.
To ease any additional stress on the dogs, people interested in adopting are not allowed to visit the shelter but must apply online. The shelter will not kill any of the dogs, but it does need to adopt them out. All adoption applications must be in by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Pictures and biographies for each dog can be viewed at www.petango.com. The easiest way to search for the dogs is to enter an Everett ZIP code into the site and use the left navigation field to search for the pinscher and papillon breeds.
Each person can choose up to two dogs to apply for by selecting their name or animal ID number that is located in each dog’s biography. A complete application must be filled out at the city of Everett’s website, www.ci.everett.wa.us/default.aspx?ID=1981.
Applications can be mailed, faxed or dropped off at the shelter, but no emailed applications are accepted.
People selected will be contacted and invited to meet and interact with the dog they are interested in.
