Donate school supplies

Main Street Coffee, Jay’s Market and the Lake Stevens Sewer District are collecting back-to-school supplies to be given to the Lake Stevens Family Center for its annual Back to School Distribution and Resource Fair.

Items that are needed include backpacks, college-ruled composition notebooks and notebook paper, highlighters, binders, dividers and folders.

Cash donations to purchase items also are being accepted.

The Lake Stevens Family Center is located at 1803 123rd Drive NE. Last year, the center helped 577 children, and this year expects to serve more than 700.

World Trade Center beam in parade: Hundreds of people have followed on Facebook the progress of four Arlington firefighters as they drove to New York City to collect a piece of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center.

The steel beam is set to be incorporated in a memorial at the downtown fire station. It will recognize the sacrifices of hundreds of firefighters, emergency medical personnel and police officers who died on Sept. 11, 2001, project volunteer Barbara Tolbert said.

The firemen, with the steel in tow, plan to drive down Olympic Avenue shortly after noon Saturday and people are asked to come out for the welcome-home parade.
