TALKING POINTS

So Everett has a win.

The Tips exploded offensively tonight, with Josh Winquist netting a natural hat trick in the first period and Tyler Maxwell chipping in with two goals. Everett eventually led 6-1 before Seattle scored three straight to make it interesting, but Darian Henry’s deflected shot from the point midway through the third period sealed it.

For Everett it’s got to be a relief to see Winquist produce. He’s a player who has offensive ability, and the Tips are hoping he will significantly increase his point total this season. Tonight was a sign that he may be able to do that.

In the goaltending battle, Andy Desautels had a better night than he did Saturday, stopping 15 of 16 as the starter. Luke Siemens had good moments and one goal he might want back as he stopped 13 of 16 in relief.

It’s been a positive progression for Everett over the weekend. The Tips began the weekend by being dominated by Tri-City, getting just 14 shots on goal in a 5-2 defeat. Everett improved Saturday against Spokane, getting 23 shots on target, but the Tips allowed five third-period goals to fall 6-4. Tonight Everett fired off 38 shots on net en route to their seven goals. So trending in the right direction.

One final observation. Just where did Jari Erricson find these dangles? Here’s a player who made his name as a rookie last season as a no-nonsense battler. But on Winquist’s third goal he performed a toe drag around a Seattle defender that was reminiscent of Shane Harper’s move on his overtime game winner against Seattle in January of 2010. Attacking the same goal, too, though Erricson is a lefty and Harper’s a righty. Here’s a reminder of Harper’s move, in case you don’t recall:
