Camano Island: Help for elementary kids
A free after-school program for elementary students called iPlace operates from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at Island Baptist Church near Camano Plaza.
The program includes tutoring and homework help, games, snacks and science demonstrations. Transportation from Elger Bay and Utsalady elementary schools is possible. Parents can register from the iPlace link at www.ibc camano.org.

Darrington: Dinner theater to raise funds
The Darrington Family Support and Resource Center is hosting its annual Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday at Darrington Elementary School, 1075 Fir St.
Registration begins at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6. Tickets are $30 or $50 for a couple or $200 for a table.
The actors are members of the Youth Coalition, a leadership team working to help prevent drug and alcohol abuse and support high school completion. The event includes audience participation in a mystery play and an auction of purses or totes donated by Josh C. from “Project Runway,” Holley Martinez from the Edgar Martinez Foundation and state Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen.
Proceeds benefit programs that help families.

Lake Stevens: Rachel’s Challenge
Families are invited to attend an assembly of hope.
Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. She left behind a challenge to treat others with kindness and compassion.
Cavelero Mid High, North Lake Middle School and Lake Stevens Middle School will host assemblies discussing Rachel’s Challenge. A public assembly is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Cavelero Mid High gym, 8220 24th St. SE.

Marysville: City board positions open
Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring is seeking people interested in filling spots on the city Planning Commission and Library Board.
The Planning Commission is an advisory board to the mayor and City Council on issues such as land use, critical areas and shoreline management planning, and long-range planning issues. The new planning commissioner must live within city limits and would serve a six-year term.
Applicants for the Library Board position must reside within Marysville School District area boundaries or within city limits. Terms are for five years.
Both positions are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
To apply, send a brief letter of interest and a resume to the City Clerk’s Office, Marysville City Hall, 1049 State Ave., Marysville, WA 98270. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Oct. 21.
