State ski areas may expand recreation opportunities

BELLINGHAM — Congress has approved more summer activities at ski areas on federal lands.
The Bellingham Herald reported that the Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act the cleared the Senate Tuesday will allow ski areas to be used for more than winter sports.
Sen. Maria Cantwell said the legislation should help the state’s tourism industry by attracting more visitors for hiking, mountain biking, and expanded hospitality such as restaurants and weddings.
Mt. Baker Ski Area operations manager Gwyn Howat saif it doesn’t have any plans for summer operations.
Other state ski areas that could benefit: 49 Degrees North at Chewelah, Crystal Mountain in Pierce County, Mission Ridge near Wenatchee, Stevens Pass in Snohomish County, Snoqualmie Pass in King County, White Pass in Lewis County, and Ski Bluewood at Walla Walla.
