SAN DIEGO — A slow start offensively and some defensive lapses late in the game proved costly for the Jackson Timberwolves on Tuesday in their loss to Scripps Ranch (Calif.) at the annual Surf and Slam Basketball Tournament.
“Early in the game we really struggled shooting the ball,” said Jackson head coach Steve Johnson, whose team trailed 27-20 at halftime.
The Timberwolves found their shooting stroke in the third quarter, outscoring the Falcons 17-7 to take a 3-point lead into the final period. But Jackson struggled on defense in the fourth quarter as Scripps Ranch scored 25 points.
“Defensively we had some pretty critical breakdowns in the fourth quarter and let the lead slip away,” Johnson said.
Dan Kingma led Jackson with 17 points, including all four of the Timberwolves’ 3-point field goals. Brian Zehr added 15 points.
Jackson’s second game in the tournament is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday against Seattle’s Ballard High School.
