Kamiak positioned to defend state title

FEDERAL WAY — John Stupey and Liam Sosinsky helped the Kamiak boys swim and dive team record some impressive times in the preliminaries at the Class 4A swim and dive state meet on Friday in its bid for a second consecutive 4A state title.
Stupey had the second-fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 100 breaststroke. He also led off for Kamiak’s 400 freestyle relay team, which had the best time of the day, as well as its 200 medley relay team, which hd the second fastest. When asked about his successful day, Stupey praised his teammates, saying everyone swam well on the way to the finals.
Stupey was excited about the possibilities in today’s finals. “The 200 medley relay team really has to shoot for breaking our own school record. We were really close in the prelims. … I’m really excited. We have a really good race tomorrow for the 400 free relay, it’s really nice to be seeded first for that.”
Sosinsky had a school record in the 200 individual medley, where he had the second-best time, according to Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson. He also will start second in today’s 100 breaststroke final.
When asked about his team’s chances at defending its title, Erickson was wary to be too confident. “Of course we’ve got a shot, but it’s going to be tough. The key with the prelims is you gotta get kids to advance, if they don’t advance to the final then you can’t get any points.”
Erickson would have liked all his swimmers to advance, but mentioned five key swimmers in the finals that he said will shore up the team’s relays and help score points. Stupey and Sosinsky were on the list along with Trent Roberts, who Erickson said moved from around 14th up to sixth in the prelims.
Another is Kyle Kusuda, who Erickson used in the prelims to swim the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay despite his normally being a breaststroker. “(Kyle) did a great job,” Erickson said. Rounding out the list was Tyler Cheung, who swam on all three of Kamiak’s relay teams and anchored two of them.
“We are going to get a lot of points out of those relays,” Erickson said.
In the 2A state prelims, Archbishop Murphy is in the hunt with North Thurston, Anacortes and Pullman for a finish as high as second, according to Wildcats head coach Mike McCloskey.
McCloskey said Stephen Boden knocked 4 seconds off of his 200 individual medley time, and 7 seconds off of his 500 free. Hunter Cosgrove improved from 11th to fifth in the 100 free.
Alec Barnard and Austin Barnard also positioned themselves well, according to McCloskey, who said he expects Austin to swim even faster in the finals.
The biggest surprise of the meet, said McClosky, was the success of diver Steve Kane. “It is fun to see a diver come in and do his job, that is an intense event,” McCloskey said.
