Lake Stevens police advise students on gun safety

LAKE STEVENS — In recent weeks, Lake Stevens police officers visited local schools to talk to kids about what to do if they find a gun or ammunition.
The visits are part of an injury-prevention program called Risk Watch that includes local police officers and firefighters, and the Everett Community College nursing program
Officers David Carter and Jim Barnes’ visits included Sunnycrest Elementary and Skyline Elementary.
Students were told never to touch a firearm or ammunition they find, and to tell an adult right away.
The program is meant to prevent tragedies, said fire district Public Educator Jennye Cooper.
Additional Risk Watch topics have been fire prevention, choking hazards, poisons, car accidents and water safety.
