5th Ave high school musical awards

Glacier Peak High School won two awards in the annual 5th Avenue Theatre recognition of Washington’s high school musical theater.

While no school swept the awards, Glacier Peak was among the top five schools.

For its production of “Addams Family,” Glacier Peak won best hair and makeup and outstanding performance by a chorus.

Kamiak High School music teacher Nancy Duck-Jefferson won the outstanding educator award for the year. A teacher at Kamiak since 1998, she currently teaches five choirs and co-directs the annual spring musical production.

Kamiak High School won a special award for education impact for its production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” Snohomish High School won the same award for its production of “Roald Dahl’s Willie Wonka.”

Student achievement awards were given to Kamiak High School’s Andrew Meyers, Edmonds Heights’ Mady Griffin, Marysville-Pilchuck’s Sage Fairbanks and Stanwood’s Cameron Chollar.

Snohomish foundation awards $152K in scholarships to seniors

The Snohomish Education Foundation awarded $152,863 in scholarships to 175 graduating seniors in the Snohomish School District. The scholarships were funded by local businesses, community organizations, community members and the Foundation. Learn more at www.snoed.org or call 360-568-5292.

Rotary hosts youth Challenge Awards

The Rotary Club of Lynnwood recently held its annual Youth Challenge Awards. Winners of cash awards this year:

Creativity: Joel Steinke, Edmonds-Woodway High School

Community Service: Reimi Pieters, Edmonds-Woodway High School

Courage: Bryan Sanchez, Everett High School

Leadership / Inspiration: Julianna Brutman, Lynnwood High School

Group: Cedarcrest Middle School Sparks, Cedarcrest Middle School

The Sparks are made up of two groups of eighth-graders who created a video on cancer awareness in honor of a math teacher’s son with lymphoma, collected toiletries for a homeless shelter, raised money to buy two goats for families in Haiti and Kenya, and other service projects.

Rotary honors Snohomish teens

The Snohomish Rotary Club, during a special breakfast meeting on May 14, recognized secondary school Students of the Second Quarter from Centennial and Valley View middle schools, and from AIM, Glacier Peak and Snohomish high schools: Paden Branshaw, Ivan Daza, Kevin Lopez, Kyla Shade, Ethan Judy, Serena Winebrenner, Maddy Deam, Andrew Johnson, Mieko Schwartzmiller, Erika Tonning, Juda Beals, Preston Smith, Anthony Ammons.

Outstanding research student wins $9K at Int’l science fair

Sriharshita “Harshu” Musunuri won Best in Category for physical energy at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. About 1,700 students from more than 75 countries and nearly 500 science-affiliated science fairs competed in just 20 categories. Musunuri was awarded $5,000, and her school, Henry M. Jackson High School, was awarded $1,000. The Washington State Science and Engineering Fair, which sent Musunuri to Pittsburgh, also received a grant.

Musunuri is a ninth-grader. In addition to the Best in Category prize, she also won a special award from the United Technologies Corporation that includes $3,000 in stock, a first-place award of $3,000 and the Innovation Exploration Award for a trip to Caltech to present her research, network with professionals, and tour the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

“Throughout this experience, with its pressures, deadlines and material issues, she has handled herself extremely well. A weaker researcher would have hung it up months ago,” Jackson High research club advisor Andy Sevald said.

Lynnwood school nurse is certified

Hazelwood Elementary School nurse Julie Skene has received National Board Certification through the National Board for Certification of School Nurses. Skene currently is the only board certified nurse in the Edmonds School District.

Skene also was selected to be a national representative on the committee that reviewed and revised the certification process in Denver.

Foundation for Edmonds School District raises $70K

The Foundation for Edmonds School District raised more than $70,000 at a recent annual breakfast event. During the event, guests enjoyed a breakfast prepared by students of the district’s Culinary Arts program and heard from two students who have directly benefited from Foundation-funded programming.
