Hilton honored by White House

Lela Hilton, part-time English instructor at Edmonds Community College, on Sept. 10 met President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, when she joined colleagues to accept the National Humanities Medal for her involvement with the Clemente Course in the Humanities.

Hilton has been the national program director for the Clemente Course for the past three years. The Clemente Course received the medal for improving the lives of disadvantaged adults. The educational course has brought free humanities education to thousands of men and women.

“It was humbling and we felt incredibly honored,” Hilton said.

Everett students log thousands of summer reads

The Everett School District’s first Summer Reading Challenge engaged over 4,300 students in reading in an effort to avoid the “summer slide” between school years. Of those who participated, more than 2,400 met their reading goals and received prizes.

“We set out to create a ‘reading culture’ in our district’s neighborhoods,” said Joyce Stewart, the district’s associate superintendent of teaching and learning.

The program included partnerships with Everett Public Library, the Mill Creek Library and the Everett Public Schools Foundation. Students received a school reading booklet and were asked to log what they read over summer.

Prizes were awarded to students who met certain goals.

At the elementary level, students received a wristband, recognition at a school assembly, entry in a drawing for a Kindle Fire, and their name printed in The Herald if they met half of their goal. The list of names is in today’s Herald on pages B4 and B5.

Middle and high school students received a lanyard in their school’s colors, chocolate, a wristband, and entry in drawings for a $25 gift card and Kindle Fire if they read at least two books (middle school) or three books (high school).

Doner a Cadet of Distinction

Trever Doner of Snohomish was named a “Cadet of Distinction” at Army and Navy Academy. The title is given to students who achieve the highest citizenship grade (“Excellent”) and zero demerits for the first grading period of the 2015-16 school year. The Army and Navy Academy is a private, nonprofit military boarding school in San Diego County for young men in grades 7 through 12.
