EVERETT — A Snohomish County jury went home for the weekend Friday without announcing a verdict in the sex crimes trial of a former Monroe police sergeant.
It was the second full day of deliberations in the case of Carlos Alberto Martinez, 61.
He is charged with two felonies: voyeurism and possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
The two-week trial explored Martinez’ connection to a young woman whom he met when she was 10 and a student in a Monroe elementary school drug-abuse resistance class.
Martinez admitted secretly videotaping her multiple times in 2004 while she took showers at his home. She was 15 and working as the family babysitter. Now 26, she eventually moved to Texas where she became Martinez’ live-in girlfriend.
Prosecutors alleged Martinez made the videotapes for his sexual gratification as part of a years-long effort to groom the girl for sex. He testified the videos were his attempt to learn whether the teen had been cutting herself.
Jurors have sent the judge written questions about a jury instruction, access to office supplies and whether an exhibit had been admitted in the trial. They were scheduled to resume deliberations Monday.
