Painting honors firefighting legacy
Lake Stevens Fire received a special painting from Grace Marshall Hamby at a March commissioner meeting.
Marshall Hamby thanked Lake Stevens Fire and Firefighter Local 3235 for their dedicated support of her family over the past year, after the death of her father, Robert Marshall, the fire district’s longtime fire marshal who died in March 2015.
“We are so appreciative of this gift,” Fire Chief Kevin O’Brien said.
“We will be sure to give this painting a place of honor.”
‘Wild’ finish to reading quiz bowl
The kids brought their “A” game to the 2016 Sno-Isle Libraries Mega-Fun, Biblio-Trivia, Rockem-Sockem Third Grade Reading Challenge finals, held March 29 at the Lake Stevens High School Performing Arts Center. It took a whopping 11 tie-breaker questions before the Sunnycrest Elementary “Wild Horses” from Lake Stevens emerged as the competition’s winner.
More than 50 third-graders from seven elementary schools across Snohomish and Island counties advanced to the finals. In typical library style, it was possibly the quietest competition around. Even winning answers were given silent cheers, with team members raising their hands shaking their fingers in support.
The competition started with 46 schools, 192 teams and 1,312 students. Questions were culled from six selected books, including “The Sasquatch Escape” by Suzanne Selfors and “Odd, Weird, &Little” by Patrick Jennings. Both authors were among the judges on stage at the finals.
The Sunnycrest Wild Horses team members, all from teacher Heidi Scott’s class are: Grace Cook, Ryedan Reed, Logan Merkel, Carson Burley, Sarah Carpenter, Coren Coe, Autumn Bardsley and Jessica Garingo.
Also making the final round were Angry Books from Cedar Way Elementary in the Edmonds School District and the Wildcats from Discovery Elementary in the Mukilteo School District.
The other teams in the finals: Cedarhome Elementary Word Chompers, Stanwood; Broad View Elementary Reading Cheetahs, Oak Harbor; Brier Elementary Book Busters, Edmonds; and Machias Elementary Bob-Nanas, Snohomish.
Scout earns prestigious rank
Boy Scout Troop 18, chartered by St. Mary Magdalen Parish of Everett, plans an Eagle Court of Honor for Jordan Ade at 2 p.m. April 3 at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church, 4514 84th St. SW. The public is invited.
Jordan Ade becomes the third generation and fourth Eagle in the Ade family, following his Uncle Todd Ade, of Everett, Uncle Rob Ade, of Seattle and grandfather Bob Ade, of Lynnwood.
For his Eagle Scout community service project, Ade in 2014 built a stage for the amphitheater at Mukilteo Elementary School’s outdoor education area. His name was added to a wooden eagle statue at the side of the stage, recognizing all the Scouts who have helped with the project over the years.
