Classes and talks

Spring colors: Spring container demonstration by Sandy Milam for innovative ways to fill your outdoor containers that will provide color and interest all season. The class is noon to 1 p.m. April 16 at Sunnyside Nursery, 3915 Sunnyside Blvd., Marysville. Free. More at 425-257-8597.

Go green: Learn about natural yard-care techniques and green gardening practices. The theme this spring is designing your garden wisely by using “right plant, right place” principles. The Good, the Bad and the Bugly: Learn the roles bugs play in the home garden; how to attract beneficial insects like bees, ladybugs and other insects; and when and how to mange pests, 7 p.m. April 20, Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 NE Camano Drive (Blue Building). Let it rain: Rain barrel workshops are April 23 and May 19 in Everett. The fee is $40 and includes a 55-gallon barrel and all the necessary parts. Space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call 425-257-8992 or go to www.everettwa.gov/LetitRain.

Trees and bees: No Nonsense Garden Club of North Snohomish County, Stillaguamish Room, City of Arlington’s Utility Building, 154 W. Cox St., across from Haller Park. A representative of the Stillaguamish Tribe will talk about “Traditional Uses of PNW Trees” from 10 a.m. to noon. April 23.

Earth Day: Week: April 20 to 23, Everett Community College. All events are free and open to the public.

April 20: Plant swap and sale, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Whitehorse Hall second floor critique space. Bring plants to trade, take free plants and/or purchase window box succulents and herbs. All proceeds benefit the EvCC plant swap.

April 21: Meaningful Magic, 11 a.m. to noon, various locations; 1 to 2 p.m. Baker Hall, Room 120. Magician James David will speak about recycling through comedy and magic.

April 22: Snohomish County Drug Take-Back, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Liberty Hall first floor entryway. Bring expired or unwanted pills for free disposal. Gardening with Ciscoe, noon to 1 p.m., Gray Wolf Hall courtyard.

April 23: Earth Week musical celebration, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. East of Henry M. Jackson Conference Center (shine) or Baker Hall, Room 120 (rain).

Earth Day: 1 to 2 p.m. April 22, Johnston-Kelly Park, 49th Street SW and Forest Drive, Everett. View Ridge Elementary School fifth-graders will join Mayor Ray Stephanson and Everett Parks &Recreation workers in planting a tree and cleaning up the park. More at everettwa.gov.

Green thumbs: Garden of Hope, a new community garden behind Snohomish Church of the Nazarene, 1017 13th St., is slated to open May 9. It will be a place for people to learn healthy dietary habits and how to grow fresh produce. Growers are asked to give 10 percent of all produce to the local food bank. Garden beds will rent for $35 for the season, plus a $15 refundable clean-up deposit. Reserve a raised bed by emailing garden@snonaz.org.

Scholarships &awards

Arlington Garden Club is offering a $2,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior in Arlington, Darrington, Lakewood, Lake Stevens or Stanwood who plans to attend an accredited university or college in Washington in 2016-17. Applicants must be enrolled full time in a program related to horticulture, agriculture, forestry, husbandry or environmental science. Floretum Garden Club has a $1,500 scholarship for a high school graduate, community college student or an individual planning a career in a horticultural field. Monroe Garden Club is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior or a college student pursuing a career in some aspect of horticulture at an accredited college or trade school. Deadline for application is May 1. For more information or an application, call 360-217-8417.

Mukilteo Way Garden Club is offering a $1,000 Scholarship for horticulture studies at Edmonds Community College. Current EdCC students, high school students and adult learners are eligible. Evergreen Awards: Mountlake Terrace is accepting nominations for its annual Evergreen Awards, which recognize property owners who take great care of their properties. All 2015 nominees will be considered this year. Nomination forms are at www.cityofmlt.com and at city facilities. Accepted through May 28.

April plant SALES

Esperanza Plant Sale:9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 15 and 16, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 17, Trinity Lutheran Church 6215 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. Perennials, shrubs, annuals, bulbs and veggie starts. Proceeds go to mission trip scholarships to build homes in Mexico.

Hardy Plant Society of Washington Plant and Seed Sale: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 17, Center for Urban Horticulture, 3501 NE 41st St., Seattle.
