Trees and bees: No Nonsense Garden Club of North Snohomish County, Stillaguamish Room, City of Arlington’s Utility Building, 154 W. Cox St., across from Haller Park. A representative of the Stillaguamish Tribe will talk about traditional uses of Pacific Northwest trees from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Go green: Learn about natural yard-care techniques and green gardening practices. The theme this spring is designing your garden wisely by using “right plant, right place” principles. Spring fling: Sammamish Valley Spring Celebration is April 29 and 30, and May 1 in Woodinville. Visit working farms and businesses for farm demonstrations, to take a class and to chat with local artisans. Learn about heirloom veggies, sample freshly pressed apple cider, farm-fresh food and local wine. Farms and businesses will be open throughout. For all ages. Most activities are free. Say flower!: A workshop on photographing spring gardens is from 1 to 5 p.m. May 7, Meerkerk Gardens, 3531 Meerkerk Lane, Greenbank, Whidbey Island. Learn the secrets of photographing blossoms from Whidbey Island photographer Don Wodjenski. Registration is limited to 15 people. Cost is $50 per person or pair up with a spouse or friend for $85. Mother’s Day at the Garden: noon to 4 p.m. May 8, Meerkerk Gardens, 3531 Meerkerk Lane, Greenbank, Whidbey Island. Cost is $10; free for younger than 16. Harp concert on the lawn. Stroll the 10 acres of rhododendrons. Slices of Whidbey Island Pies will be for sale. More at www.meerkerkgardens.org.
Green thumbs: Garden of Hope, a new community garden behind Snohomish Church of the Nazarene, 1017 13th St., is slated to open May 9. Learn healthy dietary habits and how to grow fresh produce. Growers are asked to give 10 percent of all produce to the local food bank. Garden beds will rent for $35 for the season, plus a $15 refundable clean-up deposit. Arlington Garden Club is offering a $2,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior in Arlington, Darrington, Lakewood, Lake Stevens or Stanwood who plans to attend an accredited university or college in Washington in 2016-17. Applicants must be enrolled full time in a program related to horticulture, agriculture, forestry, husbandry or environmental science. Floretum Garden Club has a $1,500 scholarship for a high school graduate, community college student or an individual planning a career in a horticultural field. Monroe Garden Club is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior or a college student pursuing a career in some aspect of horticulture at an accredited college or trade school. Deadline for application is May 1. For more information or an application, call 360-217-8417.
Mukilteo Way Garden Club is offering a $1,000 Scholarship for horticulture studies at Edmonds Community College. Current EdCC students, high school students and adult learners are eligible. Evergreen Awards: Mountlake Terrace is accepting nominations for its annual Evergreen Awards, which recognize property owners who take great care of their properties.
