WWU Outstanding Graduates

Western Washington University honored its Outstanding Graduates for the 2015-16 academic year at spring Commencement on June 11. Local honorees:

Stephen Ateser (Jackson High School), of Bothell, Outstanding Graduate in Design as well as a Student Commencement Speaker

Danny Chong (Jackson), of Edmonds, Outstanding Graduate in Music

Andrew Holcraft, cum laude (Meadowdale), of Edmonds, Outstanding Graduate in Plastics and Composites

Danara King, cum laude (Stanwood), Outstanding Graduate in Sociology

VFW awards scholarship to Kamiak graduate

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 on June 14 awarded its $1,500 Jim Harkness Freedom Scholarship to Chloe Ames, a graduate of Kamiak High School. Ames plans to study education at Corban University in Salem, Oregon.

The scholarship is named for Jim Harkness, a Post member who fought at World War II’s Battle of the Bulge.

Zonta of Everett awards teen, women

The Zonta Club of Everett has awarded Jessamine Anderson, a graduate of Snohomish High School, with the 2016 Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship. Anderson plans to study medicine at the University of Washington.

Zonta also awarded two $3,000 scholarships to women seeking to reenter the workforce. This year’s recipients were Arnita McClinton and Elizabeth Blake.

Company awards $6K to Lynnwood grad

Seattle Premium Outlets and Simon Youth Foundation have awarded a $6,000 scholarship to Lacy Nguyen, a Lynnwood High School graduate who plans to study political science and psychology at Whitworth University.

Edmonds Foundation awards $82K

The Foundation for Edmonds School District awarded $82,500 in scholarships to 47 graduating seniors and five alumni.

Art major gets boost

Wheaton College student Sarah Kaczka, of Edmonds, received the Linda Larson Bergwall Memorial Scholarship. The Art Department presented the award at an Honors Convocation. The scholarship is awarded to a junior who has demonstrated excellence in the visual arts.

Rotary honors students

The Alderwood-Terrace Rotary sponsors the Career and Technical Student of the Month program at Lynnwood High School. Spring winners were graduates Kaylia Johnson (fire service) and Hannah Hepler (family and consumer science) and juniors Mariah Luedtke (sports medicine) and Paige Whitehead (American sign language).

Charlyn Merkle, a Brier Elementary School first-grade teacher, was the June Alderwood-Terrace Rotary Educator of the Month.
