Letter: FBI statistics show homicide letter is baloney

Regarding the Thursday letter, “In these scary times, who poses the most threat?”: I’ll make this short and sweet, keeping the thinly veiled insults like the type Mr. Hansen probably thinks he delivered so well to a minimum. Here are the exact 2010 homicide rates as reported by the FBI (source: tinyurl.com/FBIstatsMurder ):
Total homicides: 12,996. Homicides committed by whites: 6,043. Homicides committed by blacks: 6,470. Homicides committed by other race: 331. Homicides committed by unknown race: 152. Further breakdown by sex shows us that of the 6,043 homicides committed by whites in 2010, 4,234 were committed by males, which works out to about 33 percent of the overall total. Now, Hansen claimed that 90 percent of all homicides in 2010 were committed by white males, which means in his world, 11,696 of the 12,996 homicides were committed by white males.
His statistics do not add up, but given the intent of his letter, this comes as no surprise. If I had to guess, I’d say Hansen really found himself at some anti-gun web site that conformed to his preconceived notions of gun control and how white males behave, taking whatever they printed as the gospel truth. Hansen’s letter is nothing more than a factless attack on two groups of individuals he obviously despises.
