LYNNWOOD — Two 15-year-old boys fell through the ice at Lake Serene on Wednesday afternoon. One boy got himself out. The other managed to tread water for about 28 minutes until he was rescued.

Both boys were conscious when they were taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.

Crews were summoned to the lake north of Lynnwood at 3:44 p.m.

One of the firefighters, a certified rescue swimmer, was on duty at the station across the street, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

The sheriff’s office earlier Wednesday issued a warning that frozen ponds and lakes may be deadly. A teen boy died at Martha Lake between Lynnwood and Mill Creek after falling through ice in 2008. That case also happened in January.

The ice “never gets thick enough here to support the weight of a person, even a small child,” Hynes said. “We just need people to stay off the ice.”

Specially trained swimmers are part of the county-wide technical rescue team. An ice rink is among the places they practice for emergencies, Hynes said.
