Want to get on your manager’s good side?
Don’t let the details slide. In a survey by staffing firm Accountemps, 35 percent of chief financial officers cited poor attention to detail or sloppy work as the most annoying behavior by co-workers. For 28 percent of respondents, gossiping or engaging in office politics was the biggest peeve, marking a 5 percent increase from a similar survey in 2011.
To help workers avoid earning a reputation for sloppiness, Accountemps offers professionals follow five strategies:
1. Reduce distractions. Dedicate time to solely on a task, while avoiding texts and emails.
2. Simplify big projects. Dashing to complete a massive project increases mistakes. Divide work into smaller, manageable tasks.
3. Take a break. Long hours on the computer can be exhausting. A short pause — stepping out of the office and away from your computer — can freshen your perspective when you return to theassignment.
4. Enlist help from co-workers. Allow time for a trusted colleague to provide a second pair of eyes to check accuracy and work quality.
5. Assess expectations. Meet briefly with your manager at the start of a complex assignment to clarify goals and issues.
