Kevin Breel, a writer, comedian and mental health advocate, will be the lunch keynote speaker at the second annual Healthier Community Conference scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in Lynnwood. As a teenager, Breel almost took his own life. He is known for his honest approach to talking about depression.
The day-long conference also will feature Dr. Anthony Iton, a senior vice president for Healthy Communities at The California Endowment. He will explain why a ZIP code is more important than genetics for your health. Registration is $69 per person. More info: www.verdanthealth.org
Give blood: The Lynnwood Convention Center and Bloodworks Northwest plan a blood drive from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the center’s parking lot. More info: 425-778-7155
Highway 99 plan: A plan for the Edmonds Highway 99 area will be presented at a public hearing scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Edmonds City Council Chambers, 250 Fifth Ave. N. The plan calls for affordable housing, a strong business environment and better walkability. A list of transportation projects that could be eligible for state and federal funding is included. The proposed Highway 99 Subarea Plan has been worked on for more than a year. The plan can be viewed online at www.edmondshwy99.org.
