Law and order: Girls can examine career possibilities

Published 1:30 am Thursday, March 9, 2017

LYNNWOOD — A free event is planned Saturday for girls in eighth grade and high school who want to learn about careers in the law and justice field.

The event, called “Don’t Judge Me,” is set from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alderwood Boys &Girls Club. The hosts are the Snohomish County chapters of the Boys &Girls Club and Washington Women Lawyers. They want to give girls a chance to consider different careers, said Marci Volmer, director of the Boys &Girls Club in Snohomish.

Many career programs focus on kids, but there are fewer offerings for young women, event volunteer Sarah Reyes said.

“It’s important to show young girls you can be a cop, you can be in these powerful, strong positions,” she said.

Activities will include a mock trial and sessions on legal rights and understanding sexual consent.

Judges, police, prosecutors and public defenders are among the speakers.

Attendees will be fed a pizza lunch and given a one-year membership to the Boys &Girls Club.

There will be an Instagram-based scavenger-style hunt with prizes. Some schools may offer extra credit for participation.

Registration is required at tinyurl.com/inspireher. Girls also can sign up at 9:30 a.m. before the event.
