EVERETT — A water pipe in central Everett broke Tuesday afternoon, knocking out water service to 15 residences while crews investigated the break.

The break took place at about noon near the corner of Madison Street and Beverly Lane.

The pipe is located near a utility pole, and the city had to coordinate with Verizon to avoid damaging it while digging. It turned out not to be a city water main, but a pipe of unknown ownership that had water pouring out of it, said Kathleen Baxter, a spokeswoman for Everett Public Works.

Water service was expected to be restored to the area Tuesday evening.
