Nominate: The next Monte Cristo Award winners

Nominate Everett’s homes and businesses with extensive pride in their property for a Monte Cristo Award.

Awards are given in four categories: Rejuvenation and transformation. Pride of the neighborhood. Neighborhood-friendly business. Green gardening (for environmentally friendly landscaping).

The Marian Krell Award recognizes previous Monte Cristo winners who have continued to excel in beautifying and maintaining their home or business over the years.

Deadline to submit nominations is June 1.

The awards ceremony for the winners is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. Recipients will receive a Monte Cristo Award plaque. The selection committee is made up of representatives of the Council of Neighborhoods, community volunteers and city staff members.

Nomination forms can be picked up at Everett Library branches, the city of Everett office lobby in the Wall Street Building, the PUD, at local home improvement stores and through neighborhood associations. Forms can also be requested by calling 425-257-7195 or emailing jhudson@everettwa.gov.

Celebrate: Seventh annual Earth Week at EvCC

Everett Community College has a variety of Earth Week events, April 17-20, that are free and open to the public.

Electric vehicle show: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 17 and 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 18, Gray Wolf Hall breezeway. See some of the latest and best electric cars.

Solar array tours: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 17 and 20, Liberty Hall. Half-hour guided tours at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Email psnowden@everettcc.edu to sign up. No heels or open-toed shoes are allowed.

Plant swap and sale: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 18, Whitehorse Hall second floor. Bring plants to trade, take free plants and purchase vegetable starts to benefit college sustainability initiatives.

Gardening with Ciscoe: Noon to 1 p.m. April 18, Whitehorse Hall second floor. Ciscoe Morris will share tips and answer questions about Northwest gardening.

Sustainability vendor fair: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 19, Parks Student Union second floor. Live music, shop sustainable products and speak with representatives from local businesses.

Electronics recycling: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 20, parking lot F (outside, near Glacier Hall). Drop off old computers, printers, cellphones and other electronics for free recycling provided by 3-R Recycling.

Apply: Horticulture scholarships for green thumbs

Money doesn’t grow on trees, but garden clubs can help with that.

Several local garden clubs are offering scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 for horticulture classes at a trade school, community college or university during the 2017-18 academic year.

Most allow graduating high school seniors, current college students and others interested in continuing their education to apply. Applicants will be selected based on interest in horticulture, floral design, landscape design, botany, forestry or a related field. Each club has its own list of application requirements.

A $1,000 scholarship from the Mukilteo Way Garden Club is available for classes at Edmonds Community College. Applicants aren’t required to be seeking a degree in horticulture. The deadline to apply is May 31. Go to www.mwgc.org for more information.

Floretum Garden Club of Edmonds is offering a $1,500 scholarship. Applicants must be planning a career in a horticultural field. Deadline is May 8. Email JoyceJohnson310@comcast.net for an application form.

The Monroe Garden Club has a $1,000 scholarship available for those pursuing a degree in some aspect of horticulture. Applicants must reside in or within about 20 miles of Monroe. Deadline for application is May 1. For more information, call 360-217-8417.

A $2,000 scholarship from Arlington Garden Club is for classes at any Washington university or college. Applicants are required to be enrolled full time in a horticultural or related program. Go to www.arlingtongardenclub.org for more. The deadline is May 1.
