Prepare: How to get ready for a disaster
Learn how to be prepared when disaster strikes at ReadyFest, a hands-on open house event from Snohomish County Fire District 1, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Silver Firs Fire Station 13, 13611 Puget Park Drive, Everett.

• Learn how to turn off natural gas, water and electricity.

• See fire extinguisher demonstrations and practice.
·
• Get started on emergency kits through mini-workshops.
·
• Find out how to help neighbors and work together with Map Your Neighborhood.
·
• Learn hands-only CPR in just 10 minutes.
·
• Sample meals ready to eat and other nonperishable food to consider for disaster kits.
·
Enjoy kids activities, including fire engine tours and the “Wheel of Safety” game.

Listen: Steel drums at the library
The Edmonds Library and Edmonds Arts Commission wrap up their inaugural Music at the Library series with a “Tropical Escape” show, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Ian Dobson will perform on steel drums, ukulele, marimba and percussion while answering the question of how a Seattle grunge kid ended up playing tropical music for a living.
The library is at 650 Main St. Admission is free.
Music at the Library has been tied to the regular Artwalk Edmonds nights.

Stitch: Kids can learn to sew, knit, crochet
The Snohomish County Chapter of the Clothing and Textile Advisors of Washington again offers Camp Stitch-a-Lot for youth ages 8-17.
Camp Stitch-a-Lot class options include sewing, knitting and crocheting. Students learn the fundamentals of a chosen craft and finish with a completed project, such as a pillowcase, fingerless gloves or neck scarf.
Classes this year will be held in Mukilteo and Marysville, with sessions running in June and July. Registration is open through the Mukilteo and Marysville recreation offices. Class sizes are limited. Cost is $50 per class.

Work: Learn about apprenticeship
Get an introduction to trades that offer apprenticeship programs to train future skilled workers at a Workforce Snohomish “Entry to Apprenticeship” event, 6 p.m. May 10 at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W.
Find out what apprenticeship programs are, benefits, minimum requirements, required documents, the application and selection process, and timeline.

Attend: YWCA event features ‘Exhale’ author
The YWCA Snohomish County luncheon fundraiser “Women and Girls Rising” is set for 12-1:30 p.m. May 16 at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave., Everett.
The keynote speaker is Terry McMillan, author of bestsellers “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” and “Waiting to Exhale.”
Women served by the YWCA also will share their stories.
