Rena Hegel: You came to my aid

We asked readers to tell us what they love about their moms. Kids from 17 to well over 70 entered The Herald’s Mother’s Day contest. The winner received a $100 gift card to Renee’s Contemporary Clothing in Everett. But there were many other heartfelt stories. You can find all of them here.

Daughter: Myrtle Lorenzo, Everett

Mom: Rena Hegel

My mother, Rena Hegel, has been gone many years but she came to my aid when I was getting a divorce, losing our Seattle house and many of our possessions to mortgage and finance companies. I had four daughters from 12 to 4 and no money. Mother had a small house in Everett but couldn’t accommodate “the invasion,” so she found a house to rent.

She had good employment at Everett Community College and I was a nurse who hoped to soon find a job. I did, soon after arriving here, at “old General” (now Providence Regional Medical Center Everett). Eventually we bought a house together with a down payment from the sale of her house. We shared expenses and child care. She worked days and I was evening shift at the hospital. We lived together for several years until Mother decided she needed a home of her own, which happened.

We all loved her and enjoyed her until the end of her life.
