Highway 410 over Chinook Pass, which opened to nighttime traffic Tuesday, is expected to remain closed to daytime traffic through at least Wednesday.
State Department of Transportation crews will use the closure to remove trees and snags, in the hopes of limiting growth of the Norse Peak Fire, which burned within 50 feet of 410 earlier this month. The road was closed Aug. 16 between Milepost 69.4 just east of Chinook Pass and Milepost 84 at Hells Crossing.
On Tuesday the department began reopening the highway in both directions nightly between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., conditions permitting. At the time, the system was expected to stay in place until at least Friday. The department announced this afternoon that it would remain in place through Wednesday.
